Day trip to Hoover Dam and Lake Mead

Join us for a day trip by bus out to Hoover Dam, with a guided tour of the dam, followed by a 90-minute cruise and lunch on Lake Mead, the lake created by Hoover Dam.

Thursday, April 6

11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

John Carroll Awards Weekend Registration

Georgetown University staff and members of the Georgetown Club of Las Vegas will be on hand to answer questions about the program and the city.

2 – 3 p.m.

Shark Reef Tour

The Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay houses more than 1,200 species of aquatic life, including sharks, exotic fish, and sea turtles. Bring your whole family on this private tour, led by a Shark Reef educational professional. Tour will end with a Q&A session.

There are a limited number of spaces for this event, so please sign up as soon as possible.

3 – 4:30 p.m.

Backstage with Blue Man Group at The Venetian

Find out what makes Blue Man Group tick! Tour part of the stage at The Venetian, check out the group's props up close, and participate in a Q&A session with show participants. There are a limited number of spaces for this event, so please sign up as soon as possible. And make sure you register to see Blue Man Group in action at 7 p.m.

5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

University Welcome Reception

Join University President John J. DeGioia, members of the Georgetown faculty and administration, and distinguished guests 55 stories above The Strip at ghostbar at The Palms Hotel and Casino. Be sure to bring your camera for the sunset views, and see the lights go on in Vegas!

Please note that guests must be 21 years of age and older to attend this event.

See a Show!

Take advantage of Las Vegas' status as the entertainment capital of the world, and join us for a show. Thursday night's tickets are for Cirque du Soleil's Mystère at Treasure Island (7:30 p.m.) and Blue Man Group at the Venetian (7 p.m.). Even better, you can sign up for backstage tours of either show (see Thursday afternoon for Blue Man Group and Friday morning for Mystère). Tickets are limited, so please sign up early.

Tickets to shows are non-refundable.

Lecture, Discussion, and Tour: Trends and Dangers in Today's Nuclear Age

Robert Gallucci, dean of the School of Foreign Service, and Daniel Byman, director of the Security Studies Program, will lead panel discussions on nuclear testing and the threat of terrorists and nuclear weapons at the Atomic Testing Museum, which will be followed by time to explore the museum's extensive collection of atomic testing and bomb artifacts.

The panel will include Kai-Henrik Barth, the core faculty member for technology and security in Georgetown’s security studies program.

Academic Seminar: Conflicting Interpretations: The Politics of the Supreme Court Confirmation Process and What's Next

Georgetown Law Center panelists, including Viet D. Dinh, former Assistant Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice, and former clerk to Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, and Peter J. Rubin, former clerk to Justice David H. Souter, and founder of the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy, will discuss this year's Supreme Court.

University President’s Event with William Jefferson Clinton, 42nd President of the United States

Join Georgetown President John J. DeGioia for a conversation with Former President and 1968 graduate of Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service Bill Clinton about world affairs and the future of domestic policies.

You must pre-register to be admitted to this event. The cost of this event is $20. To sign up, please e-mail the Special Events Office. Make sure to include your name and the names of any guests who will attend with you in your e-mail response. You will be charged for the event when you check in at the John Carroll Awards Weekend registration in Las Vegas.

Academic Seminar: The Business of Gambling

McDonough School of Business Dean George Daly will moderate a panel with John Carroll Awardee Brian Greenspun (C'68, L'71), president and editor of Las Vegas Sun, Inc.; Tom Jenkin, president of the western division of Harrah's Entertainment, Inc.; Rob Goldstein, senior vice president of Las Vegas Sands Corp.; and other senior executives in the gaming industry. Topics will include gambling law, Las Vegas's international business position, running a casino, and more.

"Vegas 101" Reception at Mandalay Bay

Always wanted to gamble, but don't want to lose your nest egg? Join us for a reception featuring group instruction in poker, craps, and blackjack. Already an expert or not interested in gaming? The reception will also include food, drinks, and Vegas-style entertainment.

Georgetown Entertainment & Media Alliance Special Screening of "Project Rebirth"

MRC Group Screening Room

GEMA invites all John Carroll Awards Weekend attendees to join them for a a special first-look screening of “Project Rebirth”, a work-in-progress documentary film produced and directed by Jim Whitaker (C’90). The film chronicles, through time lapse motion picture cameras, the rebuilding of Ground Zero in New York City, as well as the lives of 10 individuals directly affected by the terrorist attacks, over a 10-year period. Jim Whitaker will be on hand after the 30-minute showing for a question and answer period. Space is limited.

Tour and Luncheon Discussion: Peter Paul Rubens Exhibit with Diane Apostolos-Cappadona

During this tour at the Guggenheim Hermitage Museum, Georgetown Professor Diane Apostolos-Cappadona will offer insights into the religious symbolism and artistic innovations in the work of counter-reformation Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens. There will be time for questions and discussions throughout the luncheon at Zeffirino Ristorante, which overlooks the canals at the Venetian.

Medical Center Luncheon Panel: Adult Stem Cells: What Are They and Why Should I Care?

Vassilios Papadopoulos, M.D., director of Georgetown's Biomedical Graduate Research Organization, and Kevin T. FitzGerald, S.J., Ph.D., the Dr. David Lauler Chair in Catholic Health Care Ethics at Georgetown's Center for Clinical Bioethics, will lead an informative and lively session on the scientific and ethical frontiers of adult stem cell research.

Academic Seminar: Inter-Religious Understanding

Georgetown's Office Mission and Ministry will sponsor a panel discussion exploring the university's religious heritage and different aspects of the Abrahamic traditions. Check back for more information on this seminar.

In addition to regular Palm Sunday masses, Georgetown will hold a special mass before the John Carroll Awards Banquet.

JCAW Awards Reception & Banquet

Join Georgetown alumni, family, and friends for one of the university's most beloved traditions, the John Carroll and Patrick Healy Awards Reception and Banquet. We will honor the outstanding contributions of the Georgetown community to the university and the world.

A limited number of tickets to the banquet are available at a reduced price of $150 for members of GOLD classes (undergraduate classes of 1995 – 2005). These are available on a first come, first served basis, according to the date on which we receive your registration.

Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer

Join the regular Palm Sunday masses at the Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer, across the street from Mandalay Bay.
